EIA Urges Passage of Bipartisan R&D Tax Credit Before 109th Congress Adjourns
Washington, DC – Today, the Electronic Industries Alliance (EIA) urged both houses of Congress to extend and enhance the research and development (R&D) tax credit before they adjourn the 109th Congress.

"This Congress has a lot of unfinished business," said EIA President and CEO Dave McCurdy at a news conference on Capitol Hill. "And at the top of that list is passing the R&D tax credit and sending legislation to the President so it can be signed into law."

"For the last two years both sides of the aisle have been telling the high-tech industry they support extending the R&D tax credit. Yet time and again, we've seen political gamesmanship trump sound public policy. The bipartisan support for this legislation is there. One of the best things this Congress can do to fund innovation and keep America competitive is to extend and enhance the R&D tax credit."

EIA is a long-time champion of the tax credit – available to companies only for research and development work done in the U.S. Congress has routinely voted to extend the credit, but it has been nearly a year since its lapse, and in the new fiscal year, companies face the prospect of canceling or moving innovative projects and laying off highly skilled U.S. researchers.

EIA represents companies from all different sectors of the high-tech industry, including space, defense, telecommunications and consumer products. In 2004, EIA released its public policy playbook, The Technology Industry at an Innovation Crossroads, and one of the centerpieces of that plan was a permanent and enhanced tax credit for research and development.
