EIA Statement on Congressional E-Waste Working Group Roundtable
Washington, DC - Richard Goss, the Senior Director of Environmental Affairs for the Electronic Industries Alliance (EIA), today made the following statement after participating in the Congressional E-Waste Working Group's Roundtable Discussion on electronics recycling:

"I want to thank Representatives Mike Thompson (D-CA), Louise Slaughter (D-NY), Mary Bono (R-CA) and Zach Wamp (R-TN), for hosting today's discussion.

"EIA and our member companies have been at the forefront in taking action to support the safe and appropriate recycling of used electronics products to help meet the important environmental goal of resource conservation and recovery. As manufacturers, we recognize our key role in the process, and we will continue to work with Congress, federal agencies, the states and involved stakeholders to address this challenge.

"Through these approaches, we support efforts to reduce the volume of electronic products being disposed of in landfills and to increase the beneficial reuse of materials. EIA member companies have been involved in the proper recovery and management of well over two billion pounds of used electronics products. As a result of our members' abiding dedication to product stewardship and technological innovation, the high-tech and electronics industries continue to achieve significant and sustained environmental progress throughout the entire product lifecycle.

"Given the complex nature of the challenge, EIA supports efforts to establish a viable recycling infrastructure in which all the major stakeholders – manufacturers, retailers, government, non-governmental organizations (NGOs) and recyclers – participate based on their unique expertise and capabilities. The combined goal of these institutional stakeholders should be to develop a recycling infrastructure that is convenient for the residential consumer.

"We look forward to coordinating with the members of the Congressional E-Waste Working Group and all stakeholders to consider this important challenge."
