EIA Commends Senate Finance, House Ways & Means Committees on CAFTA Votes

Washington, DC, June 15, 2005 - Electronic Industries Alliance (EIA) President and Chief Executive Officer Dave McCurdy issued the following statement in reaction to the successful markups of the Central American-Dominican Republic Free Trade Agreement (CAFTA) by Senate Finance and House Ways and Means Committees in the past two days:

"The 'mock markup' votes in favor of CAFTA mean freer trade in the Western Hemisphere is one step closer to reality. US exports to CAFTA-DR nations have risen significantly in recent years. In 2004, US firms exported $15.7 billion worth of goods to the six CAFTA-DR countries. Trade in electronics and high-tech products accounts for several billion dollars in exports alone - demonstrating the importance of this market for the US tech sector. And in recent years, overall exports to the CAFTA-DR nations have grown at a rate three times greater than that of US exports overall. These exports support critical employment in the United States. EIA has contacted dozens of Members in the House and Senate to build support for the agreement, and we encourage members of both Chambers to pass CAFTA in the coming weeks and extend the benefits of trade to workers in the U.S. and other countries."
