EIA Commends Bush Administration Nomination of Gutierrez as Commerce Secretary

Washington, DC, November 30, 2004 - Electronic Industries Alliance President Dave McCurdy issued the following statement in reaction to President Bush's nomination yesterday of Kellogg Company Chief Executive Officer Carlos Gutierrez as the successor to outgoing U.S. Commerce Department Secretary Donald Evans:

"We commend President Bush for choosing Kellogg CEO Carlos Gutierrez to head the U.S. Commerce Department in the President's second term in office. In a global economy, the U.S. Commerce Department Secretary is not just an important advisor on U.S. economic growth, but also an Ambassador to International Business, and Mr. Gutierrez brings a wealth of experience. In its first term, the Bush Administration made the Commerce Department a visible and vocal supporter of efforts to improve the climate for U.S. innovation. We urge the Administration to continue to work with our Alliance so that we can foster more innovation. EIA supports many of the proposals and recommendations the Bush Administration has previously pledged to advance, including completing the Doha Round of WTO negotiations; reforming the tax code to ensure U.S. businesses can compete globally; making the R&D tax credit permanent; and working to make universal, affordable broadband technology accessible for all Americans by 2007. EIA and its member companies -- leaders in the telecommunications, I.T., semiconductor, defense, space, and research and development industries -- look forward to working with the Bush Administration in its second term to develop a technology-oriented agenda that can create more innovation in the U.S."
