Arlington, VA, August 4, 2004 -- Electronic Industries Alliance (EIA) President Dave McCurdy issued the following statement today in response to last week's announcement by the U.S. Trade Representative regarding a framework agreement for the Doha Round of trade liberalization talks:
"EIA, the leading advocate for international trade in Washington, D.C., on behalf of the U.S. high-tech industry, is pleased with the establishment of a solid framework for negotiation of the Doha Development Agenda of global trade negotiations. This agreement sets the stage for dramatic reductions in tariffs on manufactured goods, which could, in turn, spur growth in manufacturing jobs in the United States. Further, it sets the stage for complete elimination of tariffs in key sectors, which would be a tremendous boon to the U.S. high-tech and electronics industries.
"As the Alliance pointed out in its new policy playbook on innovation (The Technology Industry at an Innovation Crossroads, available at www.eia.org/innovation), the expansion of the free market and the open international trading system has been a key ingredient in U.S. economic growth, enhanced competitiveness and an increased standard of living. This accord represents real progress toward trade liberalization and expanded growth."
