EIA: TPA ESSENTIAL FOR NATIONAL ECONOMIC RECOVERY, INTERNATIONAL DIPLOMACY
Arlington, VA – Electronic Industries Alliance President Dave McCurdy praised House Ways and Means Chairman Bill Thomas (R-CA) and Congressmen Phil Crane (R-IL), Cal Dooley (D-CA), Bill Jefferson (D-LA) and John Tanner (D-TN) for their leadership in forging compromise TPA language and applauded today’s vote in the House Ways and Means Committee.

“Trade Promotion Authority has consistently been a priority issue for U.S. electronics companies. In 2000, more than one-third of what the U.S. electronics industry produced was exported overseas – over $200 billion in goods,” said McCurdy. “However, as with everything since the tragedies of September 11, TPA has taken on new meaning and new urgency.”

“The ability of individuals to trade goods and services is one of the many freedoms so brutally attacked on September 11, 2001. The values of democracy and open markets are mutually reinforcing, as the terrorists clearly recognized in their dual assaults on the Pentagon and World Trade Center,” McCurdy continued.

“Enacting Trade Promotion Authority reaffirms our commitment to these values in the face of this national tragedy. Furthermore, expanding the system of global free trade rules remains an essential component of a larger strategy to reduce poverty, spread democracy, and stabilize regions currently festering with alienation and despair.

“In addition to the economic benefits, Trade Promotion Authority remains an essential tool for the President to exercise U.S. leadership. Just as Congress promptly granted the President a mandate to pursue U.S. objectives through military means, TPA must be quickly passed to give the President the diplomatic tools he needs to fight the international war on terrorism.”

“The President must be granted TPA to demonstrate America’s continued commitment to the global trade regime. We urge the full House and Senate to finish the job and enact Trade Promotion Authority quickly to provide the President with all the tools of leadership he needs.”
